Is it fair to reprimand someone for being 1 minute late?

We all deserve a little grace in our lives. We are all human, and we all make mistakes, and sometimes that means showing up late to something. It's not an uncommon thing. We all have that friend who we can't count on to be on time for all the tea in China. They just don't know how to do it. You tell them that something starts an hour earlier just in the hopes that they will arrive on time, but they find a way to be late no matter what. It's frustrating to put up with, but you learn how to live with it. Because after all, you're sometimes late too. Nobody is perfect, and sometimes trains are late, and traffic is crazy. We can't all be on time all the time, because the world doesn't work that way. So when something comes along that makes us a little tardy for the party, we deserve understanding and acceptance.

  • There are degrees of lateness, after all, and not all lateness is created equal. Does one minute late even count as being late? I would hazard to call that "on time." Even in a work setting. Work is probably the thing that we want to be the most on time for, and our managers want that too. They say that time is money, so lateness ultimately affects the bottom line. But we're also all humans, and we can't be expected to stay at a job forever if every time we're one minute late, we're written up. Pettiness has no room in adult life, and it should be called out when it comes up, especially from our bosses. We all need to treat each other like the adults that we are and give each other the respect we deserve.   • Psychological_B... This is called performance management. You're already on their radar and they want you gone so they are building a case with documented incidents, no matter how trivial, so they can terminate you and be resolved of liability from you suing them for it being unjustified. Common management tactic.

  • Walloflvy This is one of the reasons I accept lower pay and lack of benefits to work at a small business. There's no clocking in/out for unpaid breaks. I just say I'm going to the bathroom/walking to the deli for a soda/gonna eat something real quick and do it without anyone caring.
